Appreciate Smallville, Or Else

I hope the title isn't too threatening, I didn't really mean it. In response to Julia Waterhous' article in the Seattle Times on July 19th, which I wrote about right here, reader Raj Manoharan has written a letter about why Tom Welling's portrayal of Clark Kent could not only deck Brandon Routh's version, but also Christian Bale's Batman. Head over to read the letter. Here's some of what Raj had to say:

I've been attempting to convince a lot of my other friends that the Clark Kent is none other than Tom Welling's portrayal in Smallville. We have been having hypothetical debates about whether the Batman portrayed by Christian Bale in Batman Begins would rival Tom Welling/Superman and Brandon Routh/Superman. The hefty majority agree that Bale's personality gives Batman an edge over Routh's Superman. However, versus Welling's Superman ... the fight would be quite even.

And yet, I wouldn't like to see Christian (I almost typed Christina. Oops!) and Tom battling it out. I would hate to think of the damage they could do to one another.

I've been feeling a little under the weather for a few days, so there are a couple of things I haven't yet got around to doing. One of those things is posting some reviews of Mark's movie, Circling Serita, which premiered last Thursday. Mark wasn't at the premiere, unfortunately, but it sounds like it was a great night for everyone who could make it. If you saw the movie and haven't yet sent in a review, but would like to, please pass it along to me. And if you have already sent your review in, thank you! I'll get them all posted in a day or two when I'm a little more compos mentis.

To me, Tom Welling has a charisma that I have never seen with any other actor, and that no one else can come close to touching. His portrayal of Clark Kent is refreshing to me. I find the depth of Tom's version of the character to be intoxicating, while I find myself bored with all other portrayals. As far as Bale's portrayal as Batman, he did give the character a different edge, but I still didn't find that I couldn't tear my eyes away. Tom has brought me into an unfamiliar territory of being what a true fan is.
